Discount on Premiums Proposed to Encourage Companies to Offer Work Experience

Tuesday, January 12, 2016 | 0

A Georgia lawmaker wants legislation allowing discounts on workers' compensation premiums for employers that partner with schools to offer internships and other work experience.

Rep. Eddie Lumsden, R-12th District, plans to push a bill, HB-402, first introduced last year. The Georgia General Assembly reconvened Monday.

The plan is for an optional reduction of 5% on premiums to encourage employers to provide work-based learning opportunities for students aged 16 and older. Insurers must agree to the discount, under the proposed legislation.

Rep. Lumsden told Northwest Georgia News that the idea is to give more 16- and 17-year-olds the opportunity to get on-the-job experience.
