Generic for Opioid Antidote Evzio on the Way After Price Hikes Spark Criticism

The pricey Evzio auto-injector, which is used to administer opioid overdose antidote naloxone, will come in a generic form next year at a price of $178, compared to the current brand-name price of $4,100, drugmaker Kaleo announced. Generic drugs are typically introduced after the patent on a brand-name medication expires. But the Evzio generic will be available in mid-2019, “well in advance of Evzio’s patent expirations,” Kaleo said in a news release on Wednesday.
