Homemade, two-layer cotton face coverings can provide effective protection against spewing droplets into the air, even better than some commercially available fiber face masks, says a new study by researchers at Florida Atlantic University.
The study, published in the Physics of Fluids journal, also found that without any type of mask, droplets from an emulated cough can travel up to 12 feet — double the safe distance recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the COVID-19 pandemic.
