New York State Insurance Fund has filed suit against a garbage-hauling business owned by a city official in Mount Vernon, alleging it is owed $780,000 in workers’ compensation premiums, according to a report by the Journal News.
NYSIF alleges that R&S Waste Services purchased a workers’ compensation policy in 2012 but did not pay premiums. The carrier canceled the company’s coverage in September 2016.
R&S is owned by Mount Vernon Deputy Police Commissioner Joseph Spiezio. He refused to answer questions from the newspaper, saying he had not been served with legal papers, according to the report.
Spiezio’s waste-hauling company has contracts with Pelham, Yorktown, Westchester County and in Connecticut, the newspaper said.
