Governor Vetoes Bill to Cover Newspaper Carriers Under Workers' Comp

Gov. Roy Cooper has vetoed a bill that would have eliminated a long-standing law that allowed newspaper carriers to be classified as independent contractors instead of employees covered under workers’ compensation. The veto is expected to hold because House Bill 205 passed the Republican-dominated House 60-53 and the GOP-laden Senate 32-14. Overriding the veto requires a two-thirds vote in both chambers.
