The Workers' Compensation Research Institute out of Cambridge Massachusetts recently released a study comparing data from Texas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Pennsylvania (states that make up 40% of U.S. workers' comp benefits) and concluded that Texas' costs are highest, though workers' comp is not mandatory in Texas.
Carriers in Texas spent an average $6,495 for medical treatment, the highest of the states studied. The average indemnity or lost-wage payment is $4,912 in Texas, compared with an average of $4,048 in the other states.
