A Washington state lawmaker followed through on her promise to introduce legislation that would give workers in the so-called gig economy access to workers’ compensation benefits, health insurance, paid time off and a retirement program.
House Bill 2812, by Rep. Monica Stonier, D-Vancouver, would direct the Department of Labor and Industries to adopt rules for nonprofits to administer the various benefit programs for those working for companies such as Uber and Lyft. The House Labor and Workplace Standards Committee will hold a hearing on HB 2812 at 8 a.m. Thursday.
