Lawmaker Proposes Way to Provide Comp Coverage, Other Benefits for Gig Workers

A Washington state lawmaker followed through on her promise to introduce legislation that would give workers in the so-called gig economy access to workers’ compensation benefits, health insurance, paid time off and a retirement program. House Bill 2812, by Rep. Monica Stonier, D-Vancouver, would direct the Department of Labor and Industries to adopt rules for nonprofits to administer the various benefit programs for those working for companies such as Uber and Lyft.
