A Minnesota Opioid Prescribing Work Group convened by the state has released for public comment a set of opioid prescribing guidelines that recommend a three-day limit on opioid prescriptions for acute pain.
The guidelines advise doctors to avoid prescribing more than a three-day supply or 20 pills of low-dose, short-acting opioids for treatment of short-term pain. In addition, the entire prescription should be limited to a total of 100 morphine milligram equivalents, the guidelines say.
