Alaska Gov. Bill Walker signed into law a bill declaring drivers for transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft are independent contractors and not entitled to workers’ compensation benefits.
Walker on Thursday signed House Bill 132, by Rep. Adam Wool, D-Fairbanks, which also establishes the state as the only political entity allowed to regulate the transportation network industry. The bill prohibits local governments from enacting ordinances, laws or regulations pertaining to the TNC industry.
