As Texas, Louisiana and Florida draw thousands of out-of-state workers to help with hurricane-recovery efforts, workers’ compensation systems in those states can expect at least a modest spike in injury claims, officials said.
The main driver behind the injuries will be employees doing unfamiliar work in hazardous conditions. Aside from the usual post-hurricane hazards of electrocution, roof falls and carbon monoxide poisoning from faulty or poorly ventilated generators, recovery workers also must deal with alligators, snakes and disease-carrying insects, experts said.
