Uninsured Employer Law Takes Effect

A bill allowing the Colorado Division of Insurance to create an uninsured employer fund and to negotiate penalties for employers caught operating without insurance went into effect Saturday. House Bill 1119 requires all penalties that previously went to the division and the general fund be routed to the Colorado Uninsured Employers Fund. The DWC said in a legislative update two weeks ago that it will establish the uninsured employer fund July 1, but the fund won’t start paying benefits to injured workers until Jan. 1, 2020.
