Massachusetts' third-largest workers' compensation insurance company, Eastern Casualty Insurance Co., told its agents that as of Oct. 1 it will no longer renew policies. The company insures more than 16,000 Massachusetts businesses. As renewals are declined over the next 12 months, Eastern will gradually stop doing business altogether in the state.
Eastern argues that only alternative was to continue to lose money until the state was forced to take over the company.
