The South Dakota Supreme Court upheld an award of benefits to a waitress for a brain injury that manifested one week after she helped break up a New Year's Eve brawl at the bar where she worked.
Sarah Sorensen had "raccoon eyes" and complained of a headache after being pummeled by a customer when a fight broke out at the Harbor Bar in Watertown on Dec. 31, 2009 – but witnesses said she picked herself up, cleaned herself off and finished her shift.
Eight days later, Sorensen was undergoing surgery to drain blood and fluid from her brain.
