A former state senator officially became a workers' compensation administrative law judge after Gov. Jay Nixon confirmed his appointment last week.

Joe Keaveny, who until Thursday was a Democratic senator from St. Louis, told The Missouri Times he is excited about his new position.

"It’s an area that I’m really looking forward to practicing law in," Keaveny said. "It’s a great opportunity for me — a very important area to practice in — and quite frankly, I’m looking forward to doing it."

In the Senate, Keaveny served as the Minority Floor Leader and chaired the Progress and Development Committee. Citizens of Keaveny's district — District 4, which represents parts of St. Louis City and St. Louis County — can vote for his replacement Nov. 8. Reps. Jake Hummel and Karla May have expressed interest in the seat.

Outside the legislature, Keaveny practiced law for Weiss Attorneys and Law, and worked on U.S. Securities Exchange and Commission compliance issues for US Bank.

“Joe Keaveny has been well-respected by members from both sides of the aisle for his intellect and his leadership, and he will continue to provide that high level of public service to the people of Missouri as an administrative law judge,” Nixon said.
