Alaska lawmakers approved a workers’ compensation reform bill requested by Gov. Bill Walker that would phase out the Second Injury Fund and revise the definition of independent contractor.
House Bill 79, which the House Rules Committee introduced last year at the request of the governor, would close the Second Injury Fund to claims with a date of injury after Aug. 31. All requests for reimbursement from the fund would be due by Oct. 1, 2020, and the account would shut down upon paying all claims accepted by the deadline.
