A roofing contractor in Northern California was sentenced to five years of felony probation after pleading guilty to two counts of workers’ compensation premium fraud.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office announced that Juan Luis Lopez Garcia of Salinas was also ordered to pay State Compensation Insurance Fund $18,843 in restitution.
Garcia is a licensed contractor and owner of Gold Shield Roofing. The District Attorney’s Office said Garcia reported having no employees at Gold Shield, but an investigation found that the company had workers at several job sites. The workers contradicted payroll reports Garcia provided to State Fund.
Terms of the five-year probation sentence require Garcia to secure workers’ compensation coverage for his workers and to accurately report payroll data.
