Widowed spouses of first responders are now eligible for death benefits for life, even after remarrying, the Texas Division of Workers' Compensation announced this week.
The division has adopted new rules in keeping with a 2017 state law that expanded the benefits. House Bill 2119 amended the Texas Labor Code to allow eligible spouses to remain eligible, even after remarrying, if the first responder died as a result of a work-related injury or while serving as a volunteer.
