Nine Restaurants Cited for Failing to Carry Comp Coverage

Nine restaurants in Northern California were cited for failing to carry workers’ compensation coverage, following a joint enforcement strike force investigation into businesses suspected of deliberately evading the obligation to have insurance, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Investigators from the D.A.’s office, the Department of Industrial Relations and the Employment Development Department conducted surprise inspections on June 26 and July 20.

Investigators targeted restaurants that failed to respond to a warning letter that the District Attorney’s office sent out last year informing them of the need to carry work comp coverage.

Administrative penalties handed out to the restaurants exceeded $200,000.

Restaurants that were cited include:

  • Meson Azteca, Pleasant Hill, fined $71,668.
  • New Lim’s Garden, Concord, fined $51,262.
  • Dragon City Restaurant, Brentwood, fined $28,500.
  • La Mordida, Pleasant Hill, fined $16,500.
  • Sushi One, Brentwood, fined $15,000.
  • Sunshine Cafe, Pleasant Hill, fined $7,500.
  • Tacos El Patron, Pleasant Hill, fined $7,500.
  • Grant Street Pub and Pizzeria, Concord, fined $6,500.
  • Sunshine Cafe, Pittsburg, fined $4,500.
