Just as the federal government is poised to increase maximum penalties for workplace safety violations by 78%, a workers’ rights organization has released a report that criticizes the government practice of negotiating with employers to decrease penalty amounts.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Aug. 1 will increase the maximum penalty for serious violations from $7,000 to $12,471. The maximum penalty for willful or repeated violations will increase from $70,000 to $124,709.
