MSF Says Lawmakers Abandoned Plan to Shutter Carrier

Montana State Fund said lawmakers who have been discussing future plans for the carrier over the summer are no longer exploring the possibility of shutting down it down.
The Economic Affairs Interim Committee was directed with Senate Joint Resolution 27 to study whether anything withing the State Fund’s role or structure should be changed. One thing the committee was considering was eliminating MSF and replacing the guaranteed market with a high-risk pool.
“Despite unfounded claims to the contrary, MSF was able to produce data showing that under a high-risk pool scenario, many of Montana’s small businesses would see rate increases,” the carrier said in its summer newsletter. “For this reason, and others, the committee opted to abandon the ‘elimination’ option.”
Instead, the committee is working on draft legislation that would make Montana State Fund look and operate more like a private carrier. State Fund said it has not seen any final bill language and does not have an official position.
