City Lowers Comp Premiums Through Training, More Oversight

PERMA, which insures the city of Peekskill for workers’ compensation, has agreed to drop its new premiums by $200,000 because of a favorable experience in 2016.

Mayor Frank Catalina told The Peekskill Post that better training and management practices over the past two years have lowered costs.

Claims dropped, he said, because of regular safety meetings, training sessions and a third-party administrator’s oversight of claims against the city.

“Looking to the future, the city will continue to review options to maintain maximum control over [workers'] compensation cases and will always continue to try to hold the line on increasing premiums,” City Manager Richard Leins told the newspaper.

PERMA stands for Public Employer Risk Management Association. Based in Albany, it has provided workers’ compensation coverage to municipal employers for more than 30 years.
