Judge Sentences Police Sergeant to 2 Years for Faking Injury

Monday, December 5, 2016 | 0

A Hingham, Massachusetts, police sergeant was sentenced to two years in jail for faking an on-the-job injury in 2015.

A Plymouth County Superior Court jury on Thursday found Sgt. Kris Phillips, 53, guilty of two counts of filing false insurance claims and one count of misleading a police investigation, according to the Patriot Ledger.

Judge Gary Nickerson sentenced him to two years in prison, with six months spent in Dukes County jail and the other 18 months suspended for three years. He also must pay $1,900 and forfeit all ties to the police department.

On July 17, 2015, Phillips claimed a car backed into him while he was on foot patrol in the parking lot of a retail development.

He went on leave at full pay while Blue Cross Blue Shield paid for medical treatment. An internal police investigation later determined that he had faked the injury, and a grand jury indicted him in December 2015.

A cook who worked in a restaurant in the development said that he saw Phillips fake the injury. He said that Phillips waited until a worker was backing her car out, then slapped her car and pretended to fall to the ground.

The cook, driver and numerous police officers testified during the trial, which took place over three days beginning Nov. 28.
