An effort by the governor to remove the former Iowa Workers' Compensation Commissioner from office has cost taxpayers $1 million in legal fees and could top $4 million in fees and damages before the fight is over.
That's the tally as reported by the Iowa Freedom of Information Council. In a column published Monday, Randy Evans, executive director of the council, explained that former Republican Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds (now governor) wanted commissioner Chris Godfrey to resign before his term was over.
