Senate Balks at 'Employee-Friendly' Commissioner Nominee

The elevation of a deputy commissioner to head the North Carolina Industrial Commission may have hit a roadblock after business interests said his rulings have been too employee-friendly.
Robert Harris, an attorney and deputy commissioner for several years, was nominated by Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper. But the Republican-heavy legislature must approve his appointment, and many have objected, according to a news report.
Lobbyists for business groups said a team of attorneys analyzed more than 300 of Harris' decisions as a deputy commissioner and concluded that he sided with employees 60% of the time. Harris said his own tally shows he sides with workers about 36% of the time.
Republican leaders in the Senate said Wednesday that they declined to move Harris' nomination forward Wednesday, citing the pushback from business groups, North Carolina TV station WRAL reported.
