Guidance on the change of status of two medications for chronic long-term pain has been issued by the Texas Department of Insurance.
The two opioid drugs, Fentanyl Transdermal Patches and MS-Contin, must, from Feb. 1 next year, have pre-authorization approval prior to being prescribed.
Insurance carriers, responsible for authorizing the use of the drugs going forward, have been advised to contact all injured employers, the prescribing physicians and dispensers and send notification of the change of status.
