Report: Hospital Billing Accounted for 46% of Work Comp Medical Costs

Indemnity costs accounted for 50.3% of total claim costs, and medical costs made up 49.7% for claims that closed in 2016, according to an annual report from the Kansas Department of Labor Workers Compensation Division. The total number of closed claims reporting indemnity payments for calendar year 2016 was 6,188, according to the report, while the number of closed claims reporting medical payments was 5,619. Indemnity and medical payments totaled $79.7 million and $78.7 million, respectively, for claims that closed in 2016. Medical costs included $36.1 million, or 46%, for hospital billing....
