Democratic Candidate Lacks Work Comp Insurance

A Democratic candidate for the Massachusetts governor’s office neglected to purchase workers’ compensation insurance for his campaign staff, a possible violation of state law, The Boston Globe reported.
The newspaper said that a spokesman for the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development confirmed that the Friends of Bob Massie committee did not have an insurance policy in place and that it has referred the matter to the Department of Industrial Relations “for further inquiry.”
The Massie campaign told the Globe that it was “working to address insurance requirements for our staff to comply with state requirements” after the story was posted.
Later, a campaign staffer told the newspaper that it had found an insurance carrier that would provide coverage before the end of the week. Massie released a statement saying that his campaign over the past several months has transitioned from an all-volunteer organization.
Massie, a business ethics activist and ordained Episcopalian minister, is running against Jay Gonzalez, a health care executive and former state director of administration and finance in the Democratic primary. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker also faces opponents from his party as he runs for re-election.
Baker and Gonzalez’s campaigns do have workers’ compensation insurance, the Globe reported.
