L.A. Times Endorses Poizner for Insurance Commissioner

The Los Angeles Times on Wednesday endorsed Steve Poizner in the race to replace California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.
The paper's editorial board said that as a result of having already served a four-year term as insurance commissioner, Poizner can hit the ground running without needing to get up to speed learning about a new office, unlike his competitor, Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens.
Poizner served one term as commissioner before running for governor in 2010. Poizner lost to Meg Whitman in the Republican primary.
Poizner is running for insurance commissioner as an independent. He said he is doing so to show that there is a nonpartisan path to hold state office in California.
While the goal may be laudable, the Times said it’s not why voters should support Poizner.
“Instead, voters should support him because he is the better choice to fill an important job that has a steep learning curve for newcomers,” the Times editorial board wrote.
Having prior experience doesn’t amount to a hill of beans for candidates who previously showed no ability to perform the job of an elected office, the Times said. But Poizner was “an able and innovative insurance commissioner” who “earned a reputation as an advocate for consumers, not insurance companies.”
