Virginia has seen a big jump in alternative dispute resolutions, requiring it to hire five new mediators. The state has also seen an increase in claims and first reports of injuries, bucking a national trend of declining claims frequency.
That's two of the highlights from the Virginia Workers' Compensation Annual Report for 2017, which was released this week. The report shows that although major workplace injuries in the state dropped, from 62,558 in 2016 to 58,904 in 2017, claims rose, from 47,609 to 48,007.
Likewise, first reports of injury jumped 14%.
