An upstate New York man paid $20,887 in restitution after he was caught working as a driver for a trucking company while collecting workers’ compensation benefits.
Charles Brownell, 47, of Fort Plain, pleaded guilty to insurance fraud in the fifth degree, the New York Inspector General’s Office said.
Brownell began collecting benefits when he was injured in 2013 while driving for a Palatine Bridge trucking company. He reported to medical examiners and the workers’ compensation insurer that he was not working in any capacity and was unable to drive more than short distances, the Inspector General’s Office said.
Investigators, however, learned that he was working as a long-haul driver for a company based in Little Falls. Brownell pleaded guilty in Little Falls Town Court late Monday and was sentenced to full restitution and a one-year conditional discharge.
