A southern New York basketball academy, already accused of fraud, now faces demands from the state Workers' Compensation Board for $55,000 in benefit awards it never paid, according to a Binghamton news site.
The Workers' Compensation Board has filed court papers in Broome County, demanding payment. AAUConnect billed itself as a program to help high school basketball players hone their skills and academics, but players and parents complained early on.
The former state attorney general has said the program was fraudulent. The state Department of Labor also has claims against the program for $14,000 in unpaid unemployment insurance, the newspaper reported.
It's unclear if the academy is still in business, the newspaper said. Though its website is active, a phone call to the office revealed that the line is no longer in service. Details about the workers' comp claims were not provided.
