The death of a 39-year old worker who fell through a skylight at a construction site in Athens led to $54,000 in proposed penalties by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration against his employer.
OSHA issued one willful and one other-than-serious citation to Martin Mechanical Contractors of Athens after Timothy O'Neal Gearing, a heating, air-conditioning and ventilation installer, fell 15 feet onto concrete below after a saw he was trying to unjam from the roof of a building jerked loose. He was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries, OSHA said.
