'Education Sweeps' Offer Grace Period to Employers Out of Compliance

Wednesday, March 14, 2018 | 0

The Nevada Workers’ Compensation Section plans to conduct “employer educational sweeps” this month in an effort to inform employers about the statutory requirement to provide workers’ compensation coverage and avoid costly penalties, the agency said in the spring edition of the Nevada Workers’ Compensation Chronicle.

The WCS said it has experienced an increase in non-compliance and claims against uninsured employers as the state’s economy has grown, and increasing construction activity. During the education sweeps, WCS employees will walk door-to-door in target areas.

Employers will receive a grace period to get into compliance without penalties or sanctions. To date, 840 Southern Nevada employers had been visited by the WCS enforcement team, according to Angelia Yllas, chief compliance and audit investigator for the WCS’ Southern District.

In other news, the Chronicle reported:

  • The mileage rate for claimants who must travel for medical treatment increased 1 cent, to 54.5 cents per mile, as of Jan. 1.
  • The WCS Henderson office will relocate to the Nevada State Business Center at 3300 W. Sahara Ave., Las Vegas The date will be announced later.
  • Employers can now electronically file their 2017 Form 300A data to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The forms are due by July 1. A list of employers who have not complied with the mandatory reporting is here.
