Four family members who hid more than $25 million in wages paid by their temporary employment agency, and a construction company owner who misclassified employees as independent contractors to avoid premiums, were among 1,119 cases investigated by the Massachusetts Insurance Fraud Bureau in 2015, according to the bureau's annual report.
The Fraud Bureau received 207 referrals for suspected workers' compensation claimant fraud and 89 referrals for premium fraud in 2015, out of a total of 3,658 insurance fraud cases, according to the report.
