New York's highest court on Monday ruled that municipal employers that do not provide workers' compensation coverage to their law enforcement officers can face civil liability if their officers are injured in the line of duty as a result of the employer's negligence.
Municipal employers are not required to provide comp coverage for their law enforcement officers, and many of the state's larger municipalities have exercised this option since officers have the protection of General Municipal Law Section 207-c.
