An upstate New York orthopedic surgeon was sentenced this week to one year of supervised release and he must pay almost $87,000 in restitution for defrauding the workers' compensation system.
Dr. Gregory Shankman, 70, of Clinton, New York, was sentenced Tuesday in Oneida County Court, according to a news release. He also surrendered his medical license.
An investigation by the state workers' compensation fraud inspector general determined that Shankman was running a scheme in which he collected fees for seeing patients at his offices while he was actually traveling or seeing patients elsewhere.
Shankman pleaded guilty in April.
