The state Assembly on Tuesday passed the New York State Volunteer Firefighter Enhanced Cancer Disability Benefits Act and will pay eligible volunteer firefighters monthly or lump-sum payments, or death benefits.
To be eligible for the enhanced cancer benefits, volunteer firefighters diagnosed with cancer must have served for at least five years as an interior firefighter as evidenced by passage of at least five yearly certified mask-fitting tests and, upon joining the firefighting service, must have had a physical examination that did not reveal any evidence of cancer.
