A Santa Barbara police officer pleaded not guilty to charges that he filed false workers' compensation claims against the Police Department, the Noozhawk website reported Wednesday.
The online news service said 28-year-old Jacob Finerty of Hesperia was released on his own recognizance after the department placed him on unpaid leave in May. He has been charged with four felonies related to workers' compensation fraud, Noozhawk said. Finerty started working for the department in September 2011.
A department spokesman told the news service that the charges involve fraudulent written material and fraudulent oral statements, but provided no other details. The department opened an investigation in 2014 and filed charges against Finerty on June 6, Noozhawk said.
Finerty is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing on Aug. 8 at the Santa Barbara County Superior Court.
