Pain Doctor Pleads Guilty to Accepting Kickbacks From Insys Therapeutics

Friday, October 27, 2017 | 0

A former pain management doctor pleaded guilty to health care fraud and conspiracy to receive kickbacks in exchange for prescribing a pain spray that contained the highly addictive opioid fentanyl, the Providence Journal reports.

Dr. Jerrold Rosenberg admitted to accepting more than $180,000 from Insys Therapeutics in exchange for prescribing its fentanyl spray, Subsys.

His indictment described him as "far and away the biggest prescriber of the fentanyl spray in Rhode Island" and one of the biggest in the country.

Rosenberg submitted his guilty plea before U.S. District Court Judge John McConnell on Wednesday.

The plea agreement requires him to pay roughly $755,000 in restitution to health insurance companies such as Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island and UnitedHealthcare.

Rosenberg faces up to 15 years in prison at his sentencing hearing in January. He signed a voluntary agreement in March stating he would no longer practice medicine in Rhode Island.
