The Department of Energy does not have effective procedures and controls over the workers’ compensation program at Hanford, according to an audit that was requested by two members of Congress, according to a report in the TriCity Herald.
The Department of Energy’s inspector general’s office found that claims administrators sent incomplete documentation packages to the Washington state Department of Labor & Industries, which runs the state’s monopoly workers’ compensation system.
The audit also pointed to communication and trust issues related to workers’ compensation claims filed by Hanford workers.
The audit also found a major billing and payment discrepancy with the state with regard to pension benefits costs, and also pointed to problems with credit and payment processes, the newspaper said.
The DOE's self-insured workers’ compensation claims are adjudicated by Labor & Industries. The department contracts with Penser North America to administer claims, the newspaper said.
