DOT Investigator Suspected of WC Fraud, Accessing Data

Tuesday, December 18, 2018 | 0

New York authorities have charged an investigator with the state Department of Transportation with illegally accessing transportation data for personal use and running a trucking company while receiving workers' compensation benefits.

Niccolo Mormile, 38, of Shirley, New York, was arrested in Suffolk County after investigators found that he had allegedly tapped into state and federal transport databases and shared the confidential information with his fiance, according to a news release from New York State Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott.

Mormile also claimed he suffered an injury at work when he fell in 2016. He told a physician that he wasn't working for two years but, in fact, operated his own trucking firm, CNC Trucking, according to allegations. He collected more than $28,500 in wage replacement benefits while earning at least $125,000 from the trucking business, Scott said.

Mormile's trucking company had been cited for repeated inspection failures, the news release noted.

He was released on his own recognizance pending a court date of Jan. 28.
