Bumble Bee Foods agreed to pay $1.5 million in restitution to the family of a California man who was cooked to death in an industrial cooker as part of a $6 million settlement to resolve criminal workplace safety violation charges.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said the settlement is the largest known payout in California for criminal workplace safety violations involving a single victim.
Jose Melena, was killed in October 2012 after coworkers loaded 12,000 pounds of canned tuna into a 35-foot long industrial oven, trapping him inside when it was turned on.
