A California state Senate committee approved a bill that would double permanent disability benefits in a party-line vote on Wednesday.
Three Democrats supported and two Republicans opposed Senate Bill 936 by Senate President Don Perata, D-Oakland. Democratic leaders hold little hope of persuading Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign the measure, but are using SB 936 as a vehicle to negotiate a compromise that might be passed into law late in the session.
