Faced with record-high workers’ comp payroll rates and more than 6,000 open indemnity claims, the University of California system in 2004 decided to change its philosophy on settlements.
Rather than restrict compromise-and-release deals to injured workers who were no longer employed by the university system, UC started offering the settlements to workers still at UC, an official said during a webinar this month.
