California first responders filed 133 claims for post-traumatic stress disorder from 2012 through 2016, according to a new analysis from the Department of Industrial Relations.
Ninety-two percent of first responders who filed PTSD claims also had claims for other injuries, which most frequently were sprains, strains or tears. The cost of the PTSD claims as of mid-July was about $2 million, or an average of $15,659 per claim, according to the report, which was presented last Thursday to the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation.
