New regulations intended to improve workplace safety at California oil refineries will take effect on Oct. 1, the Department of Industrial Relations announced Friday.
The regulations implement rules made by the Governor’s Interagency Working Group on Refinery Safety, which was appointed after the 2011 Chevron refinery fire. The division said key features of the regulations include:
Increased employer accountability for the mechanical integrity of refinery equipment.
Requirements to adopt safer designs and systems to the greatest extent feasible.
