A retired New York state police officer faces four felony fraud charges after he was caught working for a race track while receiving full pay for a workplace injury, state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott’s office announced Wednesday.
Prosecutors charged 51-year-old Greg A. Sweet of Theresa, New York, with two counts of workers’ compensation fraud, and one count each of grand larceny in the third degree and insurance fraud in the third degree, according to a press release.
Sweet, a former officer with the City of Ogdensburg, retired from the force after he injured his wrist in 1998 and was receiving at full pay. He retired in 2007 and continued to receive workers’ compensation benefits from the St. Lawrence County Self Insurance Plan, which covered City of Ogdensburg employees, the Inspector General’s Office said.
In August 2012 and September 2012, Sweet stated on questionnaires that he was not engaged in any type of employment or volunteer activities. An investigation revealed, however, that Sweet was employed at the Can Am Motor Speedway in Lafargeville. His duties included track maintenance and acting as a flagman.
The Inspector General’s Office said Sweet collected more than $3,000 in workers’ compensation benefits to which he was not entitled.
Sweet was arraigned in the Town of Canton Court and released pending further court action.
