A Southern California doctor pleaded not guilty to fraud charges relating to allegations that he referred workers’ compensation patients to have services provided at other clinics he owned, according to a report by patch.com.
Sr. Sanjoy Banerjee, 42, pleaded not guilty to two counts of insurance fraud and five counts of perjury on Monday. He is free on a $30,000 bond and scheduled to return to court Aug. 16 for a settlement conference, according to the report.
Banerjee, the founder and medical director of Pacific Pain Care, was arrested in May, according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
Banerjee was a workers’ compensation pain management doctor with offices in Wildomar and Corona. He was charged May 29 with illegally self-referring work comp patients to a clinical lab and an office-based surgical center that he owned.
Banerjee also allegedly signed at least five reports declaring under penalty of perjury that he had not referred patients to his own companies.
“The investigation revealed that Dr. Banerjee referred some of his workers compensation patients to his business, Rochester Imperial Surgical Center, which was located in a patient exam room inside the Pacific Pain Care office suit in Wildomar,” the District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
