Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law a bill intended to clarify the coverage requirements for independent contractors who drive commercial vehicles.
The governor on Friday signed SB 178, by Sen. Jim Smallwood, R-Parker. The bill clarifies that commercial drivers who elect not to carry workers’ compensation coverage for themselves must purchase an “occupational accident” policy that provides similar benefits.
The bill requires the insurance commissioner to draft the rules establishing minimum coverage requirements for the alternative policies.
