The North Carolina Industrial Commission continues to operate without a system that can detect all businesses that illegally go without workers’ compensation coverage, State Auditor Beth A. Wood says.
Her audit also found that commission investigations of noncompliant employers takes far too long, including one probe that lasted nearly two years.
“As a result, non-covered employees may have a difficult time getting medical bills paid and receiving back wages,” the audit says.
The commission responded that it lacks the resources to conduct timely investigations.
